Last week, I was away in Regina for the finalization of the third cycle of the Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP). The ESSP was originally developed throughout the 2013-14 school year and it aligns the work of all school divisions and the Ministry of Education. In this document, there are one-year priorities and two-to-five year outcomes that range from early years literacy to graduation rates and the plan is set to run from 2014 until 2020.
The third cycle of this plan will begin this September and wrap up in June 2019.
That may not seem like the most exciting piece of news to share in a blog, but certainly the local outcomes are! We’re seeing growth in our literacy and graduation rates with both trending on target, or above the provincial targets established for June 2020. In addition to the academic successes of our students we are also gaining momentum with our local priority around wellness. Awareness and support for the improvement of the physical and mental health of our students and staff continues to be a priority of the Board of Education. We have already begun to see positive outcomes from this priority and I am excited about the long term benefits to all that call Lloydminster Public home.
When put that way, it really is exciting news to share in a blog post!
But that does bring me to my next point. Did you know that this week is Staff Appreciation Week? If you are part of the LPSD team, one of our Board of Education members will be dropping by to share their thanks and provide some treats as a thank you.
Whether they’re part of the teaching staff, school support staff, facilities, transportation, etc., each one of our staff members work together to ensure the students who are part of LPSD are getting a great educational experience. And it truly takes a team.
Darcy Lang reminded us of the importance of focusing on the 90% that is good in our lives. I would encourage each of you to take a moment over the next few days and weeks to thank those people in our schools or community that are making a difference in the lives of our children. I am certain that this will not only have a huge impact on the person you thank but will also have a positive impact on you personally.
